In his talk at the October 1999 meeting of the Wessex Astronomical Society, Bob Mizon
suggested getting up at 6:30 am (BST) and looking at the Moon and Venus as the
dawn breaks. In case you missed it, I have photographed it for you from the
(open) bedroom window.
The weather was quite still and the outside temp was only a few degrees above freezing. Having just crawled out of a nice warm bed I was grateful for the absence of a breeze! The streaks in the sky are, surprisingly, aircraft vapour trails (why there are so many aircraft movements at this early hour is a mystery to me). A little time later, these trails became red streaks of fire in the sky. The picture was taken with a Philips ESP-80 Digital Camera, hand-held using fully automatic settings. The view was composed with the wide angle setting of its zoom lens, equivalent to a 35mm lens on a 35mm camera. Both the Moon and Venus are overexposed somewhat owing to the centre-weighted metering. This picture has been cropped and scaled to 242 x 400 to allow 640 x 480 screens to show it reasonably well. Back to Picture Contents
